A mouth freshener. It was launched in 1905 by Morishita Nanyodo (founded by Morishita Hiroshi in 1893), a drug dealer in Osaka. The company, which was renamed Morishita Hiroshi Pharmacy at the same time, had set "advertising to benefit the world" as one of its business goals since its founding, and its advertising activities stood out in the Japanese advertising world until World War II. The company's trademark was a design based on a statue of German Chancellor Bismarck, depicting the formal dress worn by the masses at the time, and the product name was named after the first character of the Confucian five virtues (benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and sincerity), which is considered the king of characters. The product was well received in line with the social climate of the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, and, coupled with efficacy advertisements on full-page ads in newspapers and magazines, billboards, utility poles, etc., it quickly became the number one selling household medicine in Japan in just two years after its launch.
