Hassler, Hans Leo
Born: October 26, 1564, Nuremberg
Died June 8, 1612, Frankfurt am Main. German composer and organist. He studied under his father Isaac, and from 1584 to 1585 under Andrea Gabrieli in Venice. He served as organist for Octavian Fugger in Augsburg from 1585, as city master of Nuremberg from 1601, and as chapel master in Dresden from 1608 until his death. He composed a great deal of church and secular choral music, incorporating the Venetian duet choral style and the homophonic style of Italian polyphonic song. His major works are Madrigals (1569) and Garden of Delights (1601).

Hassler, Ferdinand Rudolph

Born: October 7, 1770. Olau
Died November 20, 1843. Philadelphia. Swiss-born American scientist and engineer. He emigrated to the United States in 1805 and served as an instructor at the Naval Academy from 1807 to 1809. He was responsible for surveying the coast of the United States from 1816 to 1818 and from 1832 to 1843. His field surveys were extremely accurate and are still useful today.
