Fortaleza (English spelling)

Fortaleza (English spelling)
The capital of the state of Ceara in northeastern Brazil. It is a port city facing the Atlantic Ocean, located 650 km northwest of Recife, straddling both banks of the Pageu River estuary. It developed around a fortress built by the Portuguese, and was established as a city in 1823. The port is an open anchorage with no natural shelter, and cargo handling was required by barges, but in recent years a new port protected by a breakwater has been built at Cape Mucuripe, about 6 km east, and ships with a draft of 7 m or less can dock, greatly improving port functions. As the state's main port, it ships sugar, coffee, cashew nuts, shrimp, salt, rubber, cotton, carnauba wax (a wax extracted from the carnauba palm), rum, and other products. There are factories producing dyes, fine ceramics, packaging materials, and more. It is also known as a seaside resort. It is home to the Federal University of Ceara (1955) and the University of Fortaleza (73). It is also a land transport centre, with roads radiating out from the city, and railways leading west to Sobral and south to Iguatu, which connects to Recife. Population: 1,758,334 (1991 estimate).
