The phenomenon in which the strength of magnetization of a conductor changes periodically with the inverse of the magnetic field strength as a variable. In 1930, WJ de Haas and PM van Alphen first discovered that the magnetic susceptibility of bismuth oscillated with the strength of the magnetic field at a temperature of 14 K obtained by evacuating liquid hydrogen. This phenomenon is understood to be the fluctuation of magnetization that occurs when the Landau levels successively drop below the Fermi level in response to changes in the magnetic field strength when the conduction electrons of metals and degenerate semiconductors are quantized by a magnetic field to create levels that orbit in an orbit (Landau levels).

導体の磁化の強さが磁場強度の逆数を変数として一定周期をもつように変化する現象。1930年にド･ハースW.J.de Haasとファン･アルフェンP.M.van Alphenが，液体水素を排気して得た14Kの温度において，ビスマスの磁化率が磁場の大きさにつれて振動的に変化することを見いだしたのが最初である。この現象は金属や縮退半導体の伝導電子が，磁場で量子化されて周回軌道を回る準位(ランダウ準位)を作るとき，磁場強度の変化に応じて，ランダウ準位が次々にフェルミ準位を切っていくことに対応して生ずる磁化の変動として理解されている。
