A folk song from Ise City, Mie Prefecture. This is the "Okihiki Kiyariuta" (wood-pulling song) sung when parishioners pull and carry lumber for rebuilding the shrine at the Shikinen Sengu ceremony, which is held once every 20 years at Ise Grand Shrine. Its origins are unclear, but it is thought to have originated from the medieval "Kudoki" (wood-pulling chanting), and was refined in the Edo period into today's 7-7-5-5 rhythm and 26-character format. This "Okihiki Kiyariuta," commonly called "Yatokose" (a chant for musical accompaniment), found its way into the entertainment districts of Furuichi and Kawasaki, bustling towns in front of Ise Grand Shrine, and became a song for drinking parties for visitors to Ise, leading to it spreading throughout Japan as a souvenir from Ise. However, on May 4, 1796 (Kansei 8), a customer at the Abura-ya in Furuichi, a doctor named Magofuku Itsuki, committed a major crime by slaying nine people while drunk. This incident was quickly turned into a play, and Tokusaburo Chikamatsu, a playwright at the corner of Dotonbori in Osaka, made the assailant a priest, changed the number of assassins from nine to ten, and used the "Yatokose" as the background music for the murders. He also gave the play the title "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba," and since then "Yatokose" has come to be known as "Ise Ondo."
