2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid. C 13 H 18 O 2 (206.29). 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid is synthesized by reacting ethyl (4-isobutylphenyl)acetate with diethyl carbonate to produce diethyl 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)malonate, which is then methylated and hydrolyzed (decarbonated). Colorless crystals. Melting point 75-77 °C. Easily soluble in many organic solvents, practically insoluble in water. A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic drug with 16-32 times the activity of aspirin. LD 50 1255 mg/kg (mouse, oral).
