Zheng-guo-qu; Chêng-kuo-ch`ü

This irrigation canal was built by Zheng Guo of Han towards the end of the Warring States period in China. At the time, Han was trying to prevent an invasion by Qin and drain its financial and manpower by sending the engineer Zheng Guo to build a canal over 300 li (1 li is about 413m) long from the Jing River, a tributary of the Wei River, to the Luo River. Zheng's plot was discovered midway through and he was imprisoned, but the completion of the canal proved beneficial for increasing Qin's agricultural productivity, so construction continued. When completed, about 40,000 irrigated fields (1 li is about 4.5 hectares) had been created, and the Guanzhong area was said to have produced more than three times the previous harvest.

中国の戦国時代末期に韓の人鄭国が造った灌漑用の運河。当時韓は秦の侵略を防ぐため，秦の財力，人力を消耗させようと技術者の鄭国を派遣して，渭 (い) 水の支流の涇 (けい) 水から洛水まで全長三百余里 (1里は約 413m) の渠 (運河) を造らせようとした。鄭国のこの謀略は途中で露見し投獄されたが，この渠の完成は秦の農業生産力の増強に有利であることがわかり，工事は継続され，完成すると4万頃 (1頃は約 4.5ha) の灌田がなされ，関中一帯は従来の3倍以上の収穫が得られるようになったという。
