Fish, crustaceans, shellfish, and other marine animals are kept in bamboo cages, nets, boat pens, or small ponds where the water is changed frequently for a short period of time. Freshwater carp, eels, marine fish, spiny lobsters, abalone, and other animals are kept without food for a few days in order to be sold and transported after harvest. Tiger pufferfish, spiny lobsters, abalone, and other animals are kept in captivity when they can be caught in large quantities at a relatively low cost, fed, and raised until they can be sold at a high price, but there is no hope of increasing their numbers.

魚類、甲殻類、貝類などの水産動物を、竹籠(たけかご)、網、舟の生け簀(す)、またはよく水の交換する小さな池に入れ、短期間飼育すること。淡水産のコイ・ウナギ、海産の魚類・イセエビ・アワビなどは、収穫してから販売・運搬するため、餌(えさ)を与えずに数日間飼育する。トラフグ、イセエビ、アワビなどは、比較的安価で大量に漁獲できるときに収容し、餌を与えて、高価で販売できるまで飼育するが、増量は期待できない。
