Japan's largest marshland is located in the Oze region on the border of Fukushima, Gunma, and Niigata prefectures. It is located at the bottom of a basin near the source of the Tadami River, a tributary of the Agano River, and is 6 km long and 1-2 km wide. It is about 1,400 meters above sea level. It was formed when a dammed lake caused by the eruption of Mt. Hiuchigatake filled up and became a marshland, and there are 400 ponds and marshes of various sizes. It is rich in alpine plants such as Hemerocallis quinquefolia and Asian skunk cabbage, and plants that are unique to Oze or whose southern limit is here, such as Oze grass and sundew, and is home to many types of insects and wild birds. It is part of Oze National Park. It was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in November 2005. → Related topics Katashina [village] | Marshland | Mt.
