A priest at Yoshida Shrine in Kyoto. His real surname was Urabe. He served the Shinto Bureau using tortoise divination, but in the mid-Heian period, around the time of Kanenobu, he was appointed as a priest at Yoshida Shrine, and later inherited the position. During the Nanboku-cho period, under the rule of Kanehiro, he took on the name Yoshida. A collateral branch included Kenko, who is famous for his Tsurezuregusa. During the Sengoku period, Kanetomo established Yuitsu Shinto (→ Yoshida Shinto), and had a great influence on the world of Shinto priests. During the Edo period, he was granted the right to issue various licenses, and he had almost all the priests in the country under his control, making his influence extremely large. In the Meiji period, he became a viscount. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
