Chernigov

The capital of Chernigov Oblast in northern Ukraine. Population 305,000 (2001). It is located about 130 km northeast of Kiev, on the right bank of the Desna River, a tributary of the Dnieper River. It is about 75 km east of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which suffered a major accident in 1986. The city is built on terraces and hills, and has a port on the riverbank. Light industry has been thriving since ancient times, with factories producing woolen and synthetic textiles, ready-made clothes, and musical instruments (such as pianos bearing the "Ukraine" mark). It is home to a branch of the Kiev Industrial University, educational and research facilities, the Museum of History and Folklore Decoration, and the Kotyubinsky Memorial Museum of Ukrainian folk literature. It is an ancient capital of Ukraine, known since the 9th century, and has historical buildings such as the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral (built in the 11th-12th century), the Dormition Cathedral, the Borisoglebsky Cathedral (both built in the 12th century), and the Troitsky Monastery (built in the 17th-18th century).
