Yoshiatsu Satake

Japanese: 佐竹義敦 - さたけよしあつ

1748-1785 A daimyo and painter from the mid-Edo period.
Born on October 4, leap year, in the first year of the Kan'en era. The eldest son of Satake Yoshiaki. In the eighth year of the Horeki era, he became the eighth lord of the Satake clan, the Dewa Kubota domain (Akita prefecture). While working to rebuild the domain's finances, which were in a state of crisis, he invited Hiraga Gennai to study Western painting together with his vassal Odano Naotake. He died on June 10, tenmei 5. He was 38 years old. His original name was Yoshinao. His pen name was Shozan. His works include "Understanding Paintings" and "Principles of Painting."

寛延元年閏(うるう)10月4日生まれ。佐竹義明(よしはる)の長男。宝暦8年出羽(でわ)久保田藩(秋田県)藩主佐竹家8代となる。危機に瀕した藩財政の再建につとめるかたわら,平賀源内をまねいて家臣小田野直武とともに西洋画をまなんだ。天明5年6月10日死去。38歳。初名は義直。号は曙山(しょざん)。著作に「画図理解」「画法綱領」など。
