Maximilian, Prince of Baden
Born: July 10, 1867 in Baden-Baden
Died November 6, 1929. Salem Castle German politician. Cousin of Grand Duke Frederick II of Baden. President of the Baden Senate from 1907 to 1918. Towards the end of World War I, with the collapse of military rule, he was appointed Chancellor of the German Empire on October 3, 1918, in recognition of his pacifist and liberal tendencies in order to put an end to the unfavorable war situation. He began armistice negotiations with the Allied Powers. At first, he worked hard to maintain the monarchy, but in the face of declining military morale and rebellions throughout the country, he announced the abdication of Emperor Wilhelm II on November 9, 1918, and handed the position of Chancellor over to Friedrich Ebert and retired. He has written a memoir, Erinnerungen und Dokumente (1927).
