Born: February 20, 1791 in Vienna
[Died] July 15, 1857. Vienna Austrian pianist, educator, and composer. Having studied under Beethoven, he showed talent from an early age and was expected to have a bright future as a pianist. However, due to his shy personality, he retired from the performing world in his 20s, and thereafter worked as an educator, educating many musicians, including Liszt. His more than 1,000 works range from religious music and theater music to symphonies, but he has many excellent pieces for educational piano. Among them, op.849, known as Czerny No. 30, op.299 as Czerny No. 40, and op.740 as Czerny No. 50, are considered essential textbooks for piano students in Japan as well.

オーストリアのピアニスト，教育家，作曲家。ベートーベンに学び，幼少時から才能を発揮し，ピアニストとして将来を嘱望された。しかし内気な性格から，20代で演奏界から引退し，以後教育者としてリストや多くの音楽家を育てた。 1000曲をこえる作品は，宗教音楽や劇音楽から交響曲まであらゆる種類に及ぶが，特に教育用のピアノ曲にすぐれたものが多く，なかでも op.849は『チェルニー 30番』，op.299は『チェルニー 40番』，op.740は『チェルニー 50番』として，日本でもピアノ学習者必修の教則本とされている。
