Around 1575 - 1632 Italian painter. His real name was Giovanni Battista Crespi. He was born in Novara or nearby Celano. He lived in Rome from 1586 to 1595. From the late 1690s he worked in Milan under the patronage of Cardinal Federico Borromeo. From 1602 to 1610 he produced a series on the life of Carlo Borromeo, the cardinal's uncle and a promoter of the Counter-Reformation, for Milan Cathedral. In 1621 he became the first director of the Accademia Ambrosiana, founded by the cardinal, and was at the center of artistic activity in Milan in the early 17th century, and was also involved in the design of sculptures and architecture.
