The central city of the South Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. Population 100,000 (1996). German: Budweis. A key transportation hub at the confluence of the Vltava and Marche rivers. The machinery, woodworking, metallurgy, food, and paper industries are thriving, but the city is especially famous for beer brewing and pencil manufacturing. Founded as a royal city around 1265. A bishopric was established in 1783. There is much to see, including the beautiful market square surrounded by arcades on all sides, the early Gothic church in the 13th century Dominican monastery, and the town hall (1730). チェコの南ボヘミア地方の中心都市。人口10万(1996)。ドイツ語でブートワイスBudweis。ブルタバ川とマルシェ川の合流点にある交通の要地。機械,木工,冶金,食品,製紙業が盛んだが,とくにビール醸造と鉛筆製造で名高い。国王都市として1265年ころ創立。1783年に司教座が置かれた。アーケードで四方を囲まれた美しい市場広場,13世紀のドミニコ会修道院内の前期ゴシック様式の教会,市庁舎(1730)など見るべきものは多い。
