Denison, Henry Willard

Denison, Henry Willard
Born May 11, 1846 at Guildhall, Vermont
[Died] July 3, 1914. Tokyo, Tsukiji, diplomat and lawyer. He came to Japan in 1872 and served as the American vice-consul in Yokohama. On May 1, 1880, he became a legal adviser to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From then until 1913, he devoted himself to the development of Japanese diplomacy for 34 years. As a foreign employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he participated in key moments of Meiji diplomacy such as treaty revision, the Sino-Japanese War, and the Russo-Japanese War, and contributed to Japanese diplomacy throughout his career as an adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He assisted Foreign Minister Mutsu Munemitsu at the Shimonoseki Peace Conference and prepared diplomatic documents for the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War. The arguments in those diplomatic documents helped to lead international opinion in favor of Japan. In addition to fulfilling his duties as an adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he also worked hard to train talented people such as Shidehara Kijuro, who later became central figures in Kasumigaseki. In general, Denison was highly regarded within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and just before his death, he was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, Paulownia Flowers, First Class. This was largely due to his character, which was to focus solely on his role as an advisor.
