A perennial plant of the Allium genus of the Liliaceae family. It commonly grows in fields and mountains, and along roadsides. It has a distinctive odor similar to that of green onions and garlic. The bulbs are white and spherical, about 1-2 cm in diameter. The stems are solid and cylindrical, slender, 50-80 cm tall, and have several leaves at the bottom. The leaves are long and thin, hollow, and concave at the top. In May and June, an umbel is formed at the top of the stem, and many whitish-purple flowers bloom. Some or all of the flowers often turn into bulbils. The plant has been edible since ancient times, and the whole plant is boiled to make vinegared miso. The Japanese name means "leech that grows in the field," and "leech" refers to plants such as green onions and garlic.
