A type of hairstyle for women. It originated with the prostitute Katsuyama in the Genroku period (1688-1704). After the ban on wearing masks was issued in the early Edo period, both men and women began to walk around bare-faced, and naturally various hairstyles arose. Many of them began with prostitutes, but Katsuyama was also a prostitute who moved to Yoshiwara when the ban on bathhouse girls was imposed and became all the rage. The hairstyle is done by making a large loop at the root and incorporating the ends into the topknot. As the topknot has a round loop, it is also known as the Maruwamage, which is an abbreviation of the Marumage. In the original style, the loop was long vertically, but in later times it became long horizontally. As it became popular, even the wives of feudal lords wore it, and it became a representative hairstyle for wives from samurai to peasants.
