Franz Josef Islands (English spelling) Zemlya Frantsa‐Iosifa

An archipelago in the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean, in the northwest of the Russian Federation. It belongs to Arkhangelsk Oblast. It consists of about 190 islands with a total area of 16,100 km2. The highest point is a snowy plain with an elevation of 620 m. Large islands include Bilichik Island (2,000 km2) in the east and Georg Island (2,741 km2) in the west. It is thought that a huge basalt plateau once formed the islands, but erosion has led to the formation of many islands. The islands are all at an elevation of around 350 to 500 m. Up to 85% of the surface area is covered by glaciers and snowy plains, with the rest being bare land.

ロシア連邦北西部，北極海の一部であるバレンツ海に浮かぶ諸島。アルハンゲリスク州に属する。約190の島からなり，総面積1万6100km2。最高点は標高620mの雪原。大きな島は東部のビリチェク島(2000km2)，西部のゲオルク島(2741km2)など。かつて巨大な玄武岩台地の島が形成されたが，浸食されて多数の島になったと考えられる。島々の標高も350～500m程度でそろっている。表面は，総面積の85％までが氷河や雪原で，その他も裸地が多い。
