Czech Symphonic Orchestra. Its first concert was held on January 4, 1896, conducted by Dvořák himself. Initially, the members of the orchestra also served as members of the Prague National Theatre Orchestra, but in 1901 it became independent. After independence, the orchestra's level improved dramatically during the term of its third chief conductor, Václav Talich (1883-1961) (1919-41). After World War II, in 1945 it became a Czechoslovakian state-run orchestra, and was reorganized into a new organization that also brought other performing groups and soloists under its umbrella. During this time, the principal conductors were Rafael Kubelik (1914-96), Karel Ančerl (1908-73), and Václav Neumann (1920-95), and during Ančerl's time (1950-68) the orchestra achieved a status of one of the world's leading symphony orchestras.
