…(2) Classicism During the reign of Catherine the Great (1762-96), the extravagant style of the Baroque receded in literature, as in other fields of art, and an era of classical restraint began. Representative writers include the tragic poet Sumarokov, the epic poet Mikhail Matveevich Kheraskov (Russiada, 1779), and the comedian Fonvizin (The Parent, 1782). The greatest poet of the 18th century, Derzhavin, ignored the rules of classicism and preferred a solemn Baroque style, while he approached Romanticism under the influence of the English Churchyard school (T. Gray, Young, etc.). …
