A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Holothuria, family Holothuridae. It is a huge sea cucumber that lives on coral reefs, reaching a body length of 60-70 cm and a width of about 10 cm, with some records showing a length of 1.2 m. It has many large protrusions on its surface, and its shape resembles a plum blossom, hence the name "umebana" (plum blossom). Its overall appearance resembles a pineapple, hence its scientific name ananas (pineapple). It is usually reddish orange in color, with yellow or dark brown dots scattered throughout, and the parts without the protrusions are dark yellow-green. It is made into a dried product for consumption, and is called Gajimaru in the Okinawa region and Umehana-san in China, and is traded as a premium product. It is widely distributed in the Ryukyu Islands, Southeast Asia, South Pacific Islands, and Australia.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門ナマコ綱マナマコ科に属する海産動物。サンゴ礁産の巨大なナマコで、体長60~70センチメートル、太さ10センチメートルぐらいになり、1.2メートルの記録もある。体表に多数の大きな突起物があり、その形状がウメの花に似ていることから梅花の名がついた。また、全体の外観がパイナップルに似ていることから、学名ananas(パイナップル)と名づけられた。普通、赤橙(せきとう)色で、黄色または暗褐色の細点が散在し、突起のない部分は暗黄緑色を帯びる。食用として乾製品にされ、沖縄地方ではガジマル、中国では梅花参とよばれ、最高級品として取引される。南西諸島、東南アジア、南洋諸島、オーストラリア方面に広く分布する。
