...Indonesia literature was established in the 1920s, with novels from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, such as G. Francis' Dasima the Native Wife (1896) and FDJ Pangemanan's Chonat the Bandit (1900), written in very common Malay, the common language of the colonial society at the time, depicting legendary incidents, so to speak, as literature on the eve of its birth. Abdul Muis' Salah Ashan (The Westernized) (1928) is a representative work of this period. In this novel, the author, who was also a nationalist, portrays the tragedy of a young Westernized official who abandons his village but is ultimately unable to be accepted into Dutch society and is ruined, with the protagonist's marriage to Kory, a woman of mixed European and Asian descent, as the theme. ...
