A city in southwestern Finland. Located on the western edge of the Finnish Lake District, it is the largest inland city in Northern Europe. Its Swedish name is Tammerfors. With a population of 197,774 (2001), it is the third largest in the country after the capital Helsinki and Espoo. The town originated as a waterwheel settlement in the 18th century, taking advantage of the rapids that cut through the Great Esker (a dike-like glacial landform) that separates two lakes with different water levels. The introduction of spinning machines by the Scots in 1819 made this settlement the first site of the Industrial Revolution in Finland. The convenient water and land transportation and hydroelectric power generation are the factors that led to its growth. While coastal industrial cities are biased towards export-oriented industries such as lumber, pulp, and silk-reeling, Tampere's industries are focused on final products for the domestic market, such as textiles, machinery, leather, food, rubber, and paint. In addition to a comprehensive university, there are many religious and cultural facilities.
