[Died] June 4, 1864, Kensington British economist. He studied at Oxford University, and was the first professor of the Drummond Chair of Economics, established at the university from 1825 to 1830. He served as a member of the Poor Law Committee in 1832, the Factory Improvement Committee in 1837, and the Handweavers' Committee in 1841, and was again a professor of economics at his alma mater from 1847 to 1852. He also became an active member of the Political Economy Club from 1823. Theoretically, he followed D. Ricardo in that he followed the abstract deductive method, but he became a critic of Ricardo in the theory of value and profit. He is known especially for his theory of profit abstinence, which states that profit is the reward for abstinence, which is the postponement of enjoyment. This idea was inherited by J. S. Mill and even A. Marshall. He also served on various committees until his later years, and had a great influence on actual policies. His major work was An Outline of the Science of Political Economy (1836) and "Four Introductory Lectures on Political Economy" (52), among others.

イギリスの経済学者。オックスフォード大学に学び，1825～30年同大学に創設されたドラモンド経済学講座の初代教授。 32年救貧法委員会，37年工場改善委員会，41年手織工委員会などの委員を歴任し，47～52年再度母校の経済学部教授。また 23年以来ポリティカル・エコノミー・クラブの活動的なメンバーの一人となる。理論的には抽象的演繹的方法に従っているという点で D.リカードを継承するが，価値論や利潤論ではリカード批判者となる。なかでも彼は，享楽の延期という制欲に対する報酬が利潤であるとする利潤制欲説で知られる。この考え方は，J.S.ミル，さらには A.マーシャルなどにも受継がれている。また晩年にいたるまでさまざまな委員をつとめたため，実際の政策にも大きな影響を与えた。主著『経済学概要』 An Outline of the Science of Political Economy (1836) ，"Four Introductory Lectures on Political Economy" (52) など著書多数。
