Karlstadt

…It is an economic and cultural center at the confluence of the Korana and Kupa rivers. It was originally a fortress built in 1579 to protect against the Ottoman Turks and was named Karlstadt after Archduke Charles of the Habsburgs. Merchants and craftsmen soon settled there, and in 1777 it was granted to the Croats as a free city. It developed further with the construction of a railway in the 19th century.
