Kuroda family

Japanese: 黒田氏 - くろだうじ
Kuroda family
(1) The family is a branch of the Uda-Genji Sasaki clan, and has lived in Kuroda Village, Ika County, Omi Province for generations, and is said to have called itself the Kuroda clan. At the end of the Muromachi period, during the time of Takamasa, they incurred the wrath of Ashikaga Shogun Yoshitane and moved to Fukuoka, Oku County, Bizen Province, and then during the time of Shigetaka, they moved to Harima Province. During the time of Shigetaka's son, Mototaka, they served the Akamatsu clan's Kodera Masamoto for the first time, became his son-in-law (the son-in-law of his adopted daughter), and were given the custody of Himeji Castle, and called themselves the Kodera clan. Mototaka's son, Yoshitaka, served Oda Nobunaga, and in 1587, he was given the fief of 120,000 koku in Nakatsu, Buzen Province. During the Battle of Sekigahara, both Takamasa and Nagamasa belonged to the Tokugawa clan on the eastern side, and Nagamasa was given 523,000 koku as the lord of Fukuoka Castle in Chikuzen Province. Later, in the Meiji period, he was awarded the title of marquis. Nagamasa's second son, Nagaoki, was awarded 50,000 koku in Akizuki, Chikuzen in 1623, and his third son, Takamasa, was awarded 40,000 koku in Torenji, Chikuzen, and their descendants were awarded the titles of viscount and baron in the Meiji period. (2) He is said to have descended from Kaji Suenaka, the head of the Tan clan, one of the seven clans of Musashi. Suenaka's son, Iekatsu, lived in Nakayama, Komyo County, Musashi Province, and initially claimed the Nakayama clan. Iekatsu's son, Ienori, served the Later Hojo clan, and after the fall of the Later Hojo clan, during the reign of Terumori, he served Tokugawa Ieyasu and became a hatamoto (samurai retainer) of the Edo Shogunate. In the 16th year of Genroku (1703), during the reign of Naokuni, he was awarded 15,000 koku in Shimodate, Hitachi, and in the 17th year of Kyoho (1732), he was transferred to 25,000 koku in Numata, Kozuke. Naokuni became the son-in-law of Kuroda Naoaki and took the name Kuroda. In the second year of the Kanpo era (42), during the reign of Naozumi, the fief was transferred to Kururi in Kazusa Province, and his descendants were made viscounts in the Meiji period.
