Dampier, William
Born: 1652. East Coker, Somerset.
[Died] March 1715, London. British navigator. After engaging in trade in the East Indies, from 1678 he was active as a pirate from the west coast of South America to the Pacific Ocean. He stopped in Australia in 1688 and returned to the United States in 1691. In 1799 he sailed for Australia on orders from the Navy and explored the Australian coast, New Guinea, and New Britain. The Dampier Islands and Dampier Land were named after him. From 1708 to 1711 he participated in W. Rogers' circumnavigation of the world as a pilot, and rescued Alexander Selkirk (1676-1721), who is said to be the model for Robinson Crusoe, during the voyage. He wrote Voyage round the World (1697).

An iron ore shipping port in the Pilbara region in the northwest of Western Australia. It was built in 1966 in conjunction with the development of iron ore in the region. Iron ore from Tom Price and Parabadoo is exported to Japan and other countries. There are also salt fields. Population 2201 (1986).

イギリスの航海者。東インド諸島で交易に従事したのち,1678年より南アメリカの西海岸から太平洋にかけて海賊として活躍。 88年オーストラリアに立寄り,91年帰国。 99年海軍の命令でオーストラリアへ向い,オーストラリア沿岸,ニューギニア,ニューブリテン島を探検した。ダンピア諸島,ダンピアランドは彼にちなんで命名された。 1708~11年 W.ロジャーズの水先案内人として世界周航に参加し,その途中ロビンソン・クルーソーのモデルとされるアレクサンダー・セルカーク (1676~1721) を救出。『世界周航記』 Voyage round the World (1697) の著作を残した。

オーストラリア,ウェスタンオーストラリア州北西部,ピルバラ地方の鉄鉱石積出港。同地方の鉄鉱石開発に伴い 1966年に建設された。トムプライスおよびパラバドゥーからの鉄鉱石を日本などに輸出している。塩田もある。人口 2201 (1986) 。
