Born: 1652. East Coker, Somerset. [Died] March 1715, London. British navigator. After engaging in trade in the East Indies, from 1678 he was active as a pirate from the west coast of South America to the Pacific Ocean. He stopped in Australia in 1688 and returned to the United States in 1691. In 1799 he sailed for Australia on orders from the Navy and explored the Australian coast, New Guinea, and New Britain. The Dampier Islands and Dampier Land were named after him. From 1708 to 1711 he participated in W. Rogers' circumnavigation of the world as a pilot, and rescued Alexander Selkirk (1676-1721), who is said to be the model for Robinson Crusoe, during the voyage.
