〘Noun〙① Shooting an arrow. Archery. ※Chronicles (720), July, 3rd year of the reign of Jitō (Kitano Honin) “A place for learning archery (ikusa) was established.”② Warrior. Warrior. Soldier. Also, military force. ※Chronicles (720), February, 8th year of the reign of Yūryaku (Maeda Honin) “The King of Goryeo sent out his military forces (ikusa) .”③ Soldier fighting against soldier. War. Battle. Struggles. ※Utsubo (c. 970-999), Naishi no Kami “When the Emperor of Tang was about to lose the battle.”[Etymology]( 1 ) “Iku” may be related to the ancient word “ikuwa” meaning “target” or “ikufu” meaning “to shoot.” There is also a theory that it is the prefix “iku (life).” "Sa" can be interpreted as either "sa" meaning "arrow " or as a suffix "sa." (2) The meaning of ③ appears in documents from the Middle Ages onwards, but it is only in the Middle Ages that it has come to be used more frequently in this sense. In particular, it is often used in military tales such as "The Tale of the Heike" and "The Tale of Hogen".
