(2) The meaning of ③ appears in documents from the Middle Ages onwards, but it is only in the Middle Ages that it has come to be used more frequently in this sense. In particular, it is often used in military tales such as "The Tale of the Heike" and "The Tale of Hogen".

(2)③の意が資料に現われるのは中古になってからであるが、この意味で多く用いられるようになるのは中世以降である。特に、「平家物語」「保元物語」など軍記物語にはこの意で用いられているものが多い。

ぐん【軍】

〘名〙① 軍隊。軍勢。兵隊。つわもの。※令義解(833)軍防「凡非簡点次者。〈謂。計帳之時也〉不輙取人入軍。及放人出一レ軍」② 戦い。戦争。いくさ。③ 律令制の軍制で、征討の時に編制した三軍の各部隊の称。一万人以上と、九千人以下五千人以上と、四千人以下三千人以上との三種類があった。※令義解(718)軍隊「三千人以上。減軍曹二人、各為一軍」④ 陸・海・空軍の総称。軍部。国軍。⑤ 旧日本陸軍で、戦時の出征に際し数個の師団をもって編制されたもの。通常、三~四個師団で編制された。軍団。⑥ スポーツなどで、一定の人数で構成された一団の者。チーム。⑦ 「ぐんたい(軍体)」の略。※三道(1423)「三体作書条々、老・女・軍、是三体也」
