Ginboshihyomon (English spelling) dark green fritillary

This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae, class Insecta. Of the nine large fritillary species found in Japan, this is the coldest-tolerant, and is found only in Hokkaido and mountainous areas north of the Chubu region of Honshu. It is not found in Honshu, Shikoku, or Kyushu west of the Kinki region. Outside of Japan, it is widely distributed from Europe to northern East Asia and northern Eurasia. Wing span is about 63 mm. Although fritillary species look similar to each other, they can be distinguished by the distinctive markings on the underside of their hindwings. They emerge once a year, often on flowers in mountain grasslands from June to September. They overwinter as eggs or first-instar larvae.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目タテハチョウ科に属するチョウ。日本に産する大形ヒョウモン9種のなかではもっとも寒地性の強いもので、その産地は北海道と本州の中部地方以北の山地に限られる。近畿地方以西の本州、四国、九州には分布しない。外国では、ヨーロッパから東アジア北部にかけてユーラシア北部に広く分布する。はねの開張63ミリメートル内外。ヒョウモン類は互いによく似ているが、後ろばね裏面の斑紋(はんもん)に特徴があり、それによって見分けられる。年1回の発生、6～9月に山地の草原の花上に多い。越冬態は卵または1齢幼虫である。
