A Mongolian two-stringed chordal instrument with a horse's head carved on the top. In Inner Mongolia, it is called Morin Tolgoi Hole, and in Outer Mongolia, Morin Xuur or Khil Khuur. Some are decorated with dragons, while others have no head at all. The strings and bow are made of bundles of horse hair, and many legends about its origin relate to horses, such as the instrument being made in mourning the death of a beloved horse. The surface of the trapezoidal wooden body is covered with horse skin or thin boards to enrich the sound. The neck has a long, thin fingerboard, and the strings are not pressed against the fingerboard, but rather the fingertips stop and slide over the strings in the air to produce scales and smooth sounds. In storytelling music, it gives a sense of rhythm, and the singer plays the accompaniment or interlude by imitating the sound of a running horse or neighing. It has also become more common to use it to accompany ultindu (long songs) and bogundu (short songs). In recent years, it has been adapted to incorporate the structure of a cello and is also used in European music performances.
