[Born] 1843 [Died] 1904 French historian of the philosophy of science and mathematics. He started out as an engineer, but later became a professor at the Collège de France. He specialized in the history of ancient science. He is famous for editing the complete works of P. Fermat and Descartes. His main works are "Pour l'histoire de la science helléne" (1887) and "Recherches sur l'histoire de l'astronomie ancienne" (93).
