Japanese: 新町 - しんまち

[1] [noun] A newly opened town. *Tenshohonkyogen, Sukaraka (late Muromachi-early early modern period) "Here, a new town was established." [2][1] A place name in Tomiya-machi, Kurokawa-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. During the Edo period, it was a post station located between Nanakita and Yoshioka on the Oshu Kaido. Tomiya Shinmachi. Tomiya. [2] A red-light district located in Shinmachi 1-chome, Nishi-ku, Osaka City. During the Kan'ei period ( 1624-1644 ), prostitutes scattered around Osaka were gathered together and officially licensed. It consisted of Hyotan-cho, Sadojima-cho ( Echigo -cho), Shinbori-cho, Shinkyobashi-cho, Kuken-cho, etc. It was known along with Shimabara in Kyoto and Yoshiwara in Edo. Another name for Kyomachi 2-chome, one of the five districts in the Edo pleasure quarters of Shin-Yoshiwara. During the former Yoshiwara period, the name came from the fact that prostitutes from the Kamigata region moved there two or three years later than Kyomachi 1-chome and established the district.
