An insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera, family Tenthredinidae. The original species is widely distributed from Europe to the Korean Peninsula. It is about 7 mm long, with a black head and the back half of the thorax, orange-yellow otherwise, and dark wings. The larvae feed on plants of the Brassicaceae family, and can cause damage to radishes and turnips. The larvae grow to about 2 cm in length and are black velvety caterpillars called nano-chrome-mushi. They emerge five or six times a year, building cocoons in the soil in which they overwinter as pre-pupal bodies. Two other species of the same genus, the Japanese turnip sawfly and the black turnip sawfly, infest Brassicaceae vegetables; the former emerges twice a year, in spring and autumn, and the latter emerges five or six times.
