Udyana (English spelling)

...A region centered on the Swat Valley in northwestern Pakistan, separated from Gandhara in the south by mountains. In ancient times it was called Uḍḍiyāna, Udyāna, Ujiyōna, or Ujiyō. As a basin surrounded by steep mountains, it was rarely subject to foreign rule, and Buddhism flourished there from the Kushan period until around the 8th century. The state of the holy land is described in the travelogues of Chinese monks Faxian, Song Yun, Xuanzang, Huichao, and Wukong.
