Noril'sk (English spelling)
A city in the Krasnoyarsk region of Eastern Siberia, central-eastern Russia. The largest city in northern Siberia, it is located in a vast basin in the western part of the Putorana Plateau. It is a mining city that developed due to the development of copper, nickel, and coal deposits in the nearby mountains. Copper smelting was carried out in this area in the late 19th century, but it did not last long, and full-scale mining development began after the founding of this town in 1935. In 1937, it was connected by rail to Dudinka, a port on the Yenisei River, and began to develop during World War II, becoming a city in 1953. There is a metallurgical complex that refines nickel, copper, cobalt, and platinum, as well as other industries such as construction materials and food. Power is obtained from local coal, natural gas from the Mesoyakha gas field in the northern part of Tyumen Oblast, and hydroelectric power from the Khantayka River. There is a nighttime industrial university and a local museum. There is an airport. Population 175,301 (2010).
