A bird of the Sturnidae family. Wingspan 12.5cm. Gray-brown with a black head and neck, and orange yellow legs. Breeds in Siberia, Sakhalin, China, and Japan. It is distributed throughout Japan, but those in the north migrate to warmer areas in the winter. It lives in forests on plains to low mountains, nesting in tree holes, gaps in roofs, and birdhouses, and lays blue eggs. Outside of the breeding season, it lives in colonies, sometimes forming large flocks of more than a few thousand birds. It eats insects, nuts, etc. A closely related species found in Japan is the red-cheeked starling.
