Also called twitch. A rapid contraction of a muscle caused by a single action potential. In vertebrate skeletal muscles, which generate action potentials, it can be considered the unit of contractile activity. Tetanus occurs when these twitches overlap (addition). Since action potentials follow the all-or-none law, the twitching of individual skeletal muscle fibers also follows this law. However, when an entire skeletal muscle is electrically stimulated, the threshold differs depending on the muscle fiber, so the twitching of the skeletal muscle as a whole increases with increasing stimulation intensity, and does not follow the all-or-none law. 攣縮(れんしゆく)ともいう。1回の活動電位によっておこる筋肉の速やかな収縮をいう。活動電位を発生する脊椎動物の骨格筋では,その収縮活動の単位とみなすことができる。この単収縮が重なること(加重)によって強縮がおこる。活動電位は全か無かの法則に従うので,個々の骨格筋繊維の単収縮もこの法則に従う。しかし骨格筋全体を電気刺激する場合には,筋繊維により閾値(いきち)が異なるので,骨格筋全体としての単収縮は刺激強度を増すにつれて増大し,全か無かの法則に従わない。
