Tango Peninsula - Tango

Japanese:
Tango Peninsula - Tango

A peninsula that juts out in the northwest of Kyoto Prefecture toward the Sea of Japan. It is also called the Oku-Tango Peninsula or Yosa Peninsula. At the northeastern tip of the peninsula, there is the Kyogamisaki Lighthouse with a capacity of 760,000 candles. The peninsula is mainly composed of granite and tertiary layers, and faults running northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast cross it, indicating that there was intense crustal movement. In 1927 (Showa 2), the Kita-Tango earthquake occurred, causing great damage. The peninsula is generally mountainous and has little flat land, with heavy snowfall in winter and inconvenient transportation, so depopulation is severe in the interior, and some villages have already been abandoned. However, using the surplus labor force in winter, weaving has been popular as a side job for farmers throughout the peninsula since ancient times, and it is known as a production area of Tango crepe, mainly in the towns of Mineyama and Amino in Kyotango City. The coast is made up of cliffs, and the winter seasonal winds prevent fishing, but Ine, which faces Wakasa Bay, is a good fishing ground for yellowtail and is the peninsula's leading fishing port. A road circumnavigating the Tango Peninsula was opened in 1962, and there are hopes for the development of the area's beautiful tourist attractions. The coastline is part of the Tango Amanohashidate Oeyama Quasi-National Park.
