(1) An ancient clan in Japan. As the Tomo no Miyatsuko (official governor of the Yamato government) along with the Otomo clan, they served the Imperial Court with military force for generations. The Saeki clan (Saeki Muraji) in the central area is said to have the same ancestor as the Otomo clan, and is said to be a descendant of Otomo no Muroya, who lived around the time of the reign of Emperor Yuryaku in the latter half of the 5th century, and was given the surname Sukune in 684 (the 13th year of Tenmu). Originally, the Saeki clan is thought to have been a clan that managed the Saeki section, which was an Emishi who had been transferred to the inner provinces and was responsible for guarding the Imperial Court. The Saeki Muraji managed them in the central area, and the Atae clan, a clan of kuni no Miyatsuko in each province, managed them in the provinces.
