Also known as the pillbug (illustration). A small terrestrial crustacean that lives in shady, moist places such as under rotting wood, dead leaves, and stones in residential areas, flower beds, and fields, and can roll up its body into a perfect sphere when touched. It is not very noticeable during the day, but becomes active at night. It feeds on rotting fallen leaves, grass, and dead insects, but can also damage agricultural crops such as strawberries. Order: Isopoda, Family: Armadillididae. Body length: about 10 mm. Some have a gray or dark brown body with pale yellow vertical stripes, while others are uniformly dark brown or purple-black. オカダンゴムシともいう(イラスト)。宅地,花壇,畑などの朽木,枯葉や石の下など,陰になった湿気のあるところにすみ,触れたりすると,体を完全な球状にまるめることのできる小型の陸生の甲殻類。日中はあまり目だたないが,夜になると活発に活動する。腐りかけた落葉や草,昆虫などの死体を食べるが,イチゴなど農作物に害を与えることもある。等脚目ダンゴムシ科。体長10mmくらい。体は灰色あるいは暗褐色の地に淡黄色の縦縞のあるもの,一様に暗褐色または紫黒色の個体もある。
