French writer. Born in La Rochelle as the son of a wealthy Protestant financier, he moved with his family to Bordeaux and then to Paris in 1634, where he died. In 1638, he traveled to Rome with the future Cardinal de Re and met the poet Boiteur, and probably through his introduction he became a regular at the salon of the famous Marquise de Rambouillet. He also made friends with many writers, including La Fontaine and Furtiere, and frequented various salons. Based on the stories he had seen and heard during this time, he began writing a collection of short biographies, mainly about people of high society, in 1657, and is said to have been almost completed two years later, but the manuscript remained buried for a long time and was first published between 1833 and 1835.

フランスの文人。新教徒の富裕な金融業者の子としてラ･ロシェルに生まれ，一家と共にボルドーに，次いで1634年にはパリに移り住み，その地で没した。38年，のちのレ枢機卿とローマに旅して詩人ボアテュールを知り，おそらくその紹介で有名なランブイエ侯爵夫人のサロンの常連になった。またラ･フォンテーヌ，フュルティエールなど多くの文人を友とし，さまざまなサロンにも出入りした。この間に見聞した話をもとにして，57年から，おもに上流社会の人物に関する《小伝集》を書きはじめ，2年後にはほぼ完成したといわれるが，その原稿は長く埋もれて1833‐35年にはじめて刊行された。
