Thorold's deer

Japanese: クチジロジカ（英語表記）Thorold’s deer

A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Cervidae, similar to the Japanese deer but larger, with a white lower jaw and snout. It is found in eastern Tibet, Sichuan, and Qinghai at altitudes of 3,500 to 5,000 meters. It has a short face, long and slender ears, a waist a little higher than the shoulders, and broad hooves similar to those of a cow. Its hair is dense, short and gray-brown in summer and long and black-brown in winter, with no white spots on its body in either summer or winter. The pale part of its rump is yellowish brown. Its horns are large and flat, and it usually has five branches that grow in a similar way to the Japanese deer, but the third branch from the bottom is the longest, and the trunk curves back sharply from there.

ニホンジカに似るが大きく，下あごと吻端（ふんたん）が白い偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類。チベット東部，四川，青海の標高3500～5000mの高地に分布する。体長1.9～2m，尾長10～12cm，体高1.2～1.3m，体重130～140kg。顔が短くて耳介が細長く，腰が肩よりやや高く，ひづめは幅広くウシに似る。毛は密で夏毛は短く灰褐色，冬毛は長く黒褐色，夏冬とも胴に白い斑点がない。しりの淡色部は黄褐色。角は大きく扁平，枝はふつう5本でその出方はニホンジカに似るが，下から3番目の枝がもっとも長く，幹はそこから急に後ろに曲がる。
