...The earliest monastic settlements were established in Rome and Milan in Italy, on the island of Hyères southeast of Toulon and on the island of Lérins to the east in southern France, near Tours in the middle of the Loire River, and in far-flung Ireland. Augustine is said to have brought the monastic life he saw and experienced in Rome and Milan back to Hippo in Africa, where he wrote the Augustinian Rule for the monastery he built there. The island of Lérins became the source of monasteries along the Rhône River, and Martin, who founded a monastery in Tours, was made the patron saint of the Frankish Kingdom, and many newly established monasteries in Italy and Gaul were named after him. ...
