A former town in Saga County, eastern Saga Prefecture. Occupying the central Saga Plain and the right bank of the Chikugo River, rice cultivation is thriving, and the main settlement prospered in the early modern period as a rice shipping port. It produces wheat, strawberries, and melons, and is the center of seaweed farming in the Ariake Sea. There is a road bridge over National Route 208 connecting it to Okawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, on the opposite bank. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Saga City along with Yamato Town, Fuji Town, and Mitsuse Village, Kanzaki County. 12.02 km2 . Population 12,101 (2003). 佐賀県東部,佐賀郡の旧町。佐賀平野中部,筑後川右岸を占め,米作が盛んで,主集落は近世に米の積出港として繁栄。麦,イチゴ,メロンを産し,有明海のノリ養殖の中心地。対岸の福岡県大川市との間に国道208号線の道路橋がある。2005年10月佐賀郡大和町,富士町,神埼郡三瀬村と佐賀市へ編入。12.02km2。1万2101人(2003)。
