A volcanic island in the southwest Pacific Ocean, south of the Republic of Vanuatu. Also called Tana Island. Area 549 km2, population about 10,000. Mount Yasur, an active volcano in the southeast, is small at 183m above sea level, but it takes an hour to walk from the coast to its crater. The island is famous for its volcano and wild horses, and attracts many tourists. There is no town, but there are shops and accommodation for tourists, and flights run daily between the island and the capital, Bila. The climate is relatively pleasant, with plenty of rain. 南西太平洋,バヌアツ共和国南部にある火山島。タナTana島とも呼ぶ。面積549km2,人口約1万。標高183mと規模は小さいが活火山のヤスール山が南東部にあり,火口まで海岸から歩いて1時間で達する。この火山と野生の馬が有名で,観光客も多く,町はないが観光客用の店や宿泊所があり,首都のビラとの間に毎日飛行機が往復している。比較的過ごしやすい気候で,雨がよく降る。住民はメラネシア人で,伝統的世界が根強く残っている。
