It is the capital of the 7th Region (Maule) in central Chile, South America. It is located 258 km south of Santiago. It has a population of 203,231 (2002 census preliminary figure). It is one of the centers of the central agricultural region, distributing wheat, beans, grapes, etc., and is a major livestock farming center for cattle and sheep. It is also home to industries such as food, clothing, and matches. In addition to a railway to the outer port of Constitucion, the city is also connected by a main railway and the Pan-American Highway from north to south. It was founded in 1692, and in February 1818, O'Higgins, the father of independence, took the oath of independence in this city while fighting the Spanish army.
