Damselfish - Suzumedai (English spelling)

Damselfish - Suzumedai (English spelling)

A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes of the class Osteichthyes, family Pomacentridae, and a general term for species in the same family. Its Japanese name is Suzumedai, and it is found from Chiba and Niigata prefectures south to the East China Sea. Its body is oval and laterally compressed, and it is distinguished from other species in the Pomacentridae family by having scales all the way to the head and by having rounded, pointed teeth. Its body is uniformly black-brown, and when alive it has a white spot behind and below the dorsal fin, but this quickly disappears after capture. It is the fish of the same family that has adapted to the northernmost areas, and spawns in the Sea of Japan. It lives in rocky areas up to about 20 meters deep, and while other damselfish species rarely leave the reef, this species swims widely in schools up to the middle layer. It spawns in early summer, and like other damselfish species, the male cleans the surface of the rocks and protects the oval eggs laid by the female for several days until they hatch. In autumn, juvenile fish that have grown to 2-3 cm appear in large numbers along the coasts of Honshu, but those that are washed north of the Kanto region cannot survive the winter. They can reach a total length of 15 cm. They prefer to feed on zooplankton.

Most members of the Pomacentridae family are less than 15 centimeters in length, but because they are beautiful and easy to raise, many are considered ornamental fish. They come in a wide variety of colors, including the blue-based body color of the blue-green broad-headed damselfish, the yellow tropical damselfish, the black three-spot damselfish, the red-orange clownfish, the striped Oyabitcha and striped damselfish, and the blue-spotted damselfish with many blue spots. All of them live in shallow waters around rocky and coral reefs in tropical to temperate zones, and feed on plankton, benthic animals, and algae. Many live in schools.

It has many different names in different regions, including Kurouo (black fish) because it is black, Aburauo (abrauo) because it is rich in fat, and Osengorosi (sea bream). It is caught when it gathers near the coast between February and April. In the Hakata region of Kyushu, a specialty is "Abutte Kamo," where salted damselfish is grilled with the scales still on and the parts with the scales standing up are eaten along with the bones.
