…This dictionary contains over 270 Japanese words, and was commissioned to be supervised by the Ise drifter Kotayu Daikokuya, who was staying in St. Petersburg at the time. In 1841-44 and 1845-49, Mathias Alexander Castrén (1813-52), a Finnish scholar, conducted surveys of the peoples and languages of Western Siberia. Based on his findings, Castrén put forward the hypothesis that the Samoyedic, Finno-Ugric, Mongolian, Turkic, and Tungusic-Manchu languages of Siberia were closely related to each other in the past, and that their original homelands were the Altai and Sayan mountains. …
